Mastectomy or reconstruction

I really don't know whether to have reconstruction (LD has been recommended) or just go flat?

All reconstructions I've seen don't look that good & the op sounds like it takes longer to recover from. Any advice to help my decision would be great. Thanks

  • Hi Rosie Lou

Thank you for your post. I am sorry you find yourself with this dilemma.

The best people to ask about reconstruction surgery are your hospital team or specialist nurse (CNS) as they know you and your medical history. Reconstruction surgery isn't for everyone for many different reasons. But do speak to them and they will be able to go through your own individual situation.

If you haven't seen it already there is more information about what breast reconstruction is and types of breast reconstruction  on our website.

Macmillan also has information on breast reconstruction which you may find informative.

You may want to talk through the different reconstructions with people who may have had them, bearing in mind that it's their experience and it won't necessarily be yours. You can find out more about the someone like me  service run by Breast Cancer Now.

I hope you find this information helpful in guiding your decision-making process.

Please get back to us if you need any more information or support.  You may find it helpful to talk things through with one of the nurses on our helpline.  The number to call is Freephone 0808 800 4040 and the lines are open from 9am till 5pm Monday to Friday.

    Kind regards,

    Tina
