Support someone with cancer and LD

Hi, had confirmed lung cancer for bro in law with LD. Surgery not option or chemo. Radiotherapy doubtful. Looks like palliative.

waiting for PET scan next week. He is aware of cancer but I do not think he fully understands.
what is palliative care? He is not in pain or on any medication only prescribed 2 x lots of inhalers today.

im struggling to take it all in

  • Hello jkhipster67 and thanks for the post

I am sorry to hear about your brother in law's situation and appreciate there must be such a lot for you to to take in.

Hopefully once he has had the PET scan the specialist team will sit down and explain the findings and discuss the best plan for him moving forward.

Unfortunately active treatment isn't always the most appropriate way to go for every patient. Palliative care is tailored to the individual patient's situation and may involve treatments to try and control the cancer and any symptoms for as long as possible. Palliative care is also about maintaining a good quality of life of patients for however long they have left.

We have resources about cancer on our website for people with learning disabilities. Macmillan Cancer Support also have easy read booklets  using simple language and pictures.

Please get back to us if you need any more information or support.  You may find it helpful to talk things through with one of the nurses on our helpline.  The number to call is Freephone 0808 800 4040 and the lines are open from 9am till 5pm Monday to Friday.

    Best wishes,

    Naomi
