Biopsy process

Hi,

I had 3 core biopsies taken 2 weeks ago for a breast lump I had discovered. I called the breast secretary today as I havent had my results back yet. She said I am due to be discussed next Tuesday in their MDT meeting and that I can call back Wednesday morning for an update on the next steps. Does this mean its most likely cancer? I have no other symptoms other than the lump. Its around 2cmx2cm in the upper outer L breast and is a hard lump.

Thank you so much for your help- I am usually so pragmatic about health realted things but for some reason this is really bothering me and I havent been able to sleep properly since the biopsies were taken. I had a mammogram taken at the time which showed up nothing but an ultrasound was performed with these biopsies and the Dr said that he wasnt sure what it was which was the reason behind the samples being taken

Thank you for your time

Kind wishes

Kate

  • Hi Kate and thank you for your post.

I am sorry to learn about your situation.

The MDT (Multi-disciplinary team) is a team made up of doctors and nurses who have specialist knowledge about breast lumps. You can read about the multi-disciplinary team on the Breast Cancer Now website.

All biopsies can be discussed at an MDT meeting. Whether the biopsy is cancerous or benign (non-cancerous). Some very busy departments have separate meetings for cancer and non-cancerous lumps.

Try not to worry as the majority of breast lumps are found to be non-cancerous. Breast Cancer Now Charity has some good information about breast lumps  on their website.

Waiting for results is seldom an easy situation to cope with. Anxiety UK  has very useful tips and advice on how to cope with these situations.

Please get back to us if you need any more information or support.  You may find it helpful to talk things through with one of the nurses on our helpline.  The number to call is Freephone 0808 800 4040 and the lines are open from 9am till 5pm Monday to Friday.

    Kind regards,

    Tina
