Hello Linzi and thank you for posting.
There are many causes of cancer and some have more risks than others if there has been a family history. The risk of cervical cancer can be increased if an immediate family member ( mother daughter or sister) has had it, but we are unsure as to exactly why.
Cervical cancer has been greatly reduced in number since screening and the vaccine have been established. We have learnt so much more now about this cancer and know as long as you remain up to date with your cervical smears, and maintain a healthy lifestyle, then your risk factors for this cancer will be reduced.
If you are interested we have more information on family history and genetic cancers.
Take care Linzi, and I hope this helps. If you find it helpful do talk things through with one of the nurses on our helpline. The number to call is Freephone 0808 800 4040 and the lines are open from 9 am till 5 pm Monday to Friday.
