CA125 high and urgent referral

Hi all

I had a blood test done last week as had been needing to urinate quite a lot and was slightly bloated (i now have no symptoms).  CA125 came back high so had been worried all weekend, nurse has just called me to say it was 85 and she is referred me urgently for an ultrasound.  To be honest she was perfectly nice but not reassuring in the slightest and just kept saying it might not be cancer, it could be something benign and saying she was sorry.  I had started to feel a lot less anxious through reading these forums etc.  My anxiety is now sky high!  I have just turned 40 with no other symptoms etc,

Help!

  • Hello MmacK and thanks for the post

I appreciate how worried you are feeling after speaking with your nurse but try and take things one step at a time for now.

A CA125 can be raised for many different reasons. Basically any inflammation in the pelvic region can cause this level to be raised. This can be things like ovarian cysts, endometriosis, fibroids and even monthly periods. However because cancer can also raise the level of this, it is important further tests are carried out such as the ultrasound to rule out more serious causes as well.

Try and hang on for now and not over think things, avoid googling as it cannot tell you what the matter is. Hold onto the positives that apart from some symptoms last week these have now settled and otherwise you are well and ovarian cancer tends to affect women after the menopause and much older than you.

Keep yourself busy and your mind on other things as this can help with the anxiety.

I hope you know more soon. Please get back to us if you need any more information or support.  You may find it helpful to talk things through with one of the nurses on our helpline.  The number to call is Freephone 0808 800 4040 and the lines are open from 9am till 5pm Monday to Friday.

    Best wishes

    Naomi

  • Thank you so much for getting back to me Naomi.  Of course i have anxiety now so needing to go to the bathroom a lot!  But otherwise i do feel fine.  Can't stop my mind going to dark places and considering going private for the ultrasound.

But thank you for your kind and helpful advice - it has really helped.

  • Hi Naomi

I now have headaches and brain fog which to be honest been having occasionally for a few months now.  Now absolutely convinced i have cancer that has spread to my brain.  Dont want to keep calling the Dr and still dont have my appointment  through.  I'm terrified.

  • Hello MMack and thank you for your further post.

I am sorry to learn that you are experiencing other symptoms, this must be such a difficult time.

It can be a very worrying and stressful time waiting for an appointment and tests. Unfortunately, we are unable to say what the cause of your symptoms might be. It does not mean they are being caused by cancer, there are more likely to be other reasons for example, stress can cause symptoms like headaches.

It is worth contacting your GP again and letting them know what you are experiencing, and also letting them know how anxious you are feeling at the moment, as they may be able to help with this.

Take care MMack, I hope you get your appointment at the hospital soon.

    Best wishes

    Jemma
