Efudix 2 weeks in and very painful

Hi everyone,

I can’t get an appointment with my doctor until April. This is my first time using Efudix to treat my chest area and bridge of nose and just wanted to ask if the severity of my condition is normal. I knew it would be sore but this is so painful I’m having to take painkillers and use ice packs to help with the swelling and pain. I have quite a high pain fresh hold but I’ve been told to use the cream for four weeks and the areas are already scaling cracking and weeping fluid. It looks like I’ve had a acid burn.

Do I keep going? Is this normal?

Thank you so much in advance.

  • Hi JacquelineW and thanks for the post

I am sorry to hear about your situation and appreciate how this cream might affect some people. The British Association of Dermatologists (bad) have further information about efudix (5 flurouracil fu cream) and side effects on their website.

As I am sure you are aware the efudix can cause quite a skin reaction and often the skin will look worse before it get better however if you are concerned it would be worth getting a doctor to take a look.

I'm not sure if it is the GP or skin specialist you can't get an appointment with until April but if I were you I would contact both and see if either of them can see you sooner. Failing that call NHS111 for advice and see if one of their doctors can assess you.

It may be a normal reaction you are having but to be on the safe side you need to be seen soon.

    Best wishes

    Naomi
