New stoma problems

My 81 yr old mum has stage 4 bowel cancer , & had a stoma fitted 2 weeks ago . Apart from frequent leakages , she has no appetite & now has started to vomit daily . Is this normal while the stoma & bowel are settling down ? I’m worrying as she is also getting pain .

  • Hello Susannah20 and thanks for the post

I am sorry to hear about your mum and the delay in replying to you.

We can't say for sure what is causing your mum's vomiting and pain but if you haven't already you really need to let her doctors know. They need to assess and examine your mum.

It does take time for the bowel to return to a new sense of normal after surgery but it is important if there is pain and or vomiting this is looked into, in case some treatment is needed.

Sometimes the bowel can become sluggish after surgery and stop working for a time causing sickness. If and when this happens the doctors will usually stop the patient from eating and drinking and may pass a tube through the nose into the stomach whilst giving intravenous (IV) fluids until the bowel wakes up again.

I hope your mum starts to feel better soon.

There is information about problems after bowel surgery here.
