Awaiting diagnosis

I have had two previous biopsies one was a grid biopsy which took somewhere like 24 samples and the second was under General again a grid biopsy, but I believe it took over 44 samples. These were over the last three years, but since then my prostate has grown to 126cc and my PSI is 19 1/2.

I’ve just had a third biopsy which was a fusion biopsy. I had the MRI a couple of weeks ago and I had the fusion biopsy on Tuesday and I am awaiting the results. The MRI scan has shown three lesions on my prostate one, particularly large one and two smaller ones. One of the smaller ones is actually just behind my pelvis and it wasn’t possible to take a sample because of this. I am completely asymptomatic for prostate cancer. I don’t get up at night to go to the loo. I’ve got a good flow excepting in the morning when it’s slow for for a bit but the second time after half an hour is perfect but the consultant that did my biopsy told me that the third one which is behind my pelvis, if it were to be treated would have to be by radiotherapy.

I am now waiting for approximately three weeks to get a result to tell me whether it’s cancerous or not. I would like to know if anyone has any experience and could tell me if three lesions, which I take to mean tumours are something to be worried about or if they are likely to be benign.

I am new to cancer, none of my relations as far as I’m aware have ever had cancer although one friend has had prostate cancer and had his prostate removed. For this reason, if it was anyone that has experienced something similar I would appreciate knowing what I’m likely to be facing in a few weeks time.

  • Hello and thanks for your post

I'm sorry to learn about everything that has been happening and can understand that waiting to find if anything is the matter can be worrying.

People often post here on Cancer Chat to ask if anyone else has had a similar situation, but even if they have, it doesn't necessarily shed any light on what may going on with you. I'm afraid no one on here can tell you what the matter might be. The important thing is you've had all the necessary tests and biopsies to try and find out more.

I know waiting in circumstances like this is never easy but I’m afraid there is no real way round this. Some people find talking it through with family and friends and keeping busy can sometimes help. But until you know more it’s natural to worry.

Anxiety can get the better of us sometimes so try not to google online as this can fuel worry even more. Anxiety UK here have suggestions of ways to cope with worry and stressful situations.

Give us a ring if you want to talk any of this over. The number to call is Freephone 0808 800 4040 and the lines are open from 9am till 5pm Monday to Friday.

    Kind regards,

    Celene

  • I am not a health professional but had an insulinoma removed six years ago. Initially the scans etc were tough going. But they got easier and I even started to enjoy my treatments. I made a full recovery. However I refused to be discharged from the hepatology list as I enjoyed talking to the specialists so much . So, there is hope !
