After private scan

Hi,

I'm going for a private breast ultrasound today and wondered what I need to do if they say I need further tests like a biopsy etc.

I can't afford to do all services private but decided I couldn't wait for the initial scan. Do I need to tell my GP and get them to refer me for further tests or can the ultrasound provider refer me back to my NHS GP?

  • Hi and thank you for your post

I am sorry to learn about your situation.

The NHS website here explains that you are still entitled to free NHS care if you choose to pay for additional private care.

So if something were to be found during your ultrasound, the sonographer or private clinic could let your GP know and ask them to arrange a NHS referral which could be urgent or non-urgent depending on their findings. They may also be able to give you a copy of your ultrasound on disc /cd which you could take back to your GP so that you can be referred if necessary.

I hope this helps and you know more about your situation soon.

Please get back to us if you need any more information or support.  You may find it helpful to talk things through with one of the nurses on our helpline.  The number to call is Freephone 0808 800 4040 and the lines are open from 9am till 5pm Monday to Friday.

    Kind regards,

    Tina
