Cervical Smear Test

Hi! I’m a 24 year old female. My auntie was diagnosed with cervical cancer at 27 and sadly passed away from her long battle at 33. Cancer is unfortunately very common in my family and my mum also has endometriosis. I’m very concerned for my own reproductive health as my mum struggled with conceiving me. I’m on the implant so don’t get regular periods. However I’m currently bleeding when I use the toilet & experiencing bad pain in my cervix area on/off. Am I able to request a smear test younger than 25 just to put my mind at rest? Thank you:)

  • Hello and thank you for your post.

I am so sorry to learn that your auntie died at such a young age, this must have been very difficult for you all.

If you are having symptoms causing you concern, the best thing to do is to be safe and get checked by your GP. They will be able to examine you and will refer you to the hospital for any tests that may be necessary.

As you may be aware the cervical screening programme is only offered to women or people with a cervix aged 25 - 64 to check the health of the cervix, it is not a test for cancer it is done to help prevent cancer. There is more information about this here on the NHS website.

Do go and get yourself checked by your GP.

    Take care, all the best

    Jemma
