Brother in law with learning disability and possible bowel/ lung cancer

Hi,

My brother in law 69, is facing “ a suspicion of cancer”. He’s had a bowel screening test, blood tests and a  ct colonoscopy. Had a telephone call from Respiratory at local hospital. Needs another blood test, ct scan on chest and has appointment booked next Wednesday to see consultant. Told me there’s a 2 week urgent referral and a suspicion of cancer. He is unaware. Feels inconvenient to his everyday life! In denial. Tells me he’s in no pain, so does not have cancer. I fear the worst. He won’t cope with too much treatment/ stress, as won’t we.

I fear the worst. Am I being pessimistic? We as a family, myself and husband, only ones who support him. Lives in supported living with small care package. Any advice please?

  • Hello and thank you for your post.

I am sorry to learn about your brother-in-law's situation this must be a difficult time.

It can be a very worrying and stressful time waiting for tests to confirm whether or not someone has cancer. It sounds like something was picked up on the CT colonoscopy but unfortunately, until he has all the tests done no one can say with any certainty what it is. The CT scan will give the doctors more information and when your brother-in-law has his appointment with the consultant hopefully things will be more clear.

If it is found that he does have cancer, the main thing is that this has been picked up and the doctors will able to plan what the best way forward is for him. I do appreciate living with this uncertainty can be very hard and unfortunately, until your brother-in-law's situation is clarified there is not much that can be done.

I am sorry I cannot be more helpful at this time. I hope you can find out more very soon. Please get back to us if you need any more information or support.  You may find it helpful to talk things through with one of the nurses on our helpline.  The number to call is Freephone 0808 800 4040 and the lines are open from 9am till 5pm Monday to Friday.

    Take care, all the best

    Jemma

  • Update

    lung cancer confirmed.

PET scan has confirmed left lower T3 tumour, small tumour in right lung, mass in centre of chest and possibly in lymph node, N2.

  • Hello and thank you for the update.

I am sorry to hear about your brother-in-law's diagnosis. We have information on lung cancer and its types and stages on our website.

At the moment his doctors will be gathering all the information and discussing him at a multi-disciplinary team (MDT) meeting to decide on an appropriate treatment plan. Treatments for lung cancer can depend on the type and stage of the cancer and the person's general health.

As you hear more do get back to us if needed, or you could call on our nurse helpline.  The number to call is Freephone 0808 800 4040 and the lines are open from 9am till 5pm Monday to Friday.

    Take care,

    Sarah.
