Bowel cancer

Hi

I think my mother is lying to me. Cut long story short she had bloods taken then had to do a FIT test, Friday she was told she needs a colonoscopy. Her symptoms are low iron anemia, fatigue, bloating, headaches, breathlessness, bruising easily, random bruising under toe nails.

So told Friday colonoscopy, received pre assessment today and has told me she was told on the phone, whoever it was who rang, is certain she does not have cancer but would like to do colonoscopy anyways.

I don't believe her

  • Hello there and thanks for the post

I'm afraid no one here can say what is going on with your mum and what she has or hasn't been told.

I think for now you need to wait and see what the colonoscopy shows and go from there. Symptoms can be the result of so many different things but usually only further tests can say exactly what the matter may be.

Even if a health professional has some ideas about the cause until there is a confirmed diagnosis with definitive tests and results it is impossible for them to say for sure. We usually advise people going through tests and their loved ones to take things one step at a time and not to over think things until they have all the facts as anything else is just speculation.

We can't say whether your mum is telling you everything, sometimes people try and protect their loved one's or can miss hear or misunderstand what has been said to them. If someone can attend any future appointments with your mum it may help to get a better understanding of what may be going on.

At the moment it is important that the doctor carries out any necessary tests to get some more answers to what the problem may be but this can take time.

Please get back to us if you need any more information or support.  You may find it helpful to talk things through with one of the nurses on our helpline.  The number to call is Freephone 0808 800 4040 and the lines are open from 9am till 5pm Monday to Friday.

    Take care,

    Naomi
