Medication

I'm considering stopping aromatose inhibitor after 8 and a half years due to side effects and would like advice please

  • Hello, and thanks for your post,

I am sorry that you have experienced so many side effects with your aromatase inhibitors and it is amazing that given all these side effects you have carried on taking them for 8 1/2 years.

Women are on aromatase inhibitors anywhere from 5-10 years. As I am not involved in your care I can't really comment on your situation but do discuss this with your GP before you stop them. These drugs do carry on working and benefiting patients once they have stopped.

Over the years there have been various trials looking at the length of time that women should be on these drugs as well as the benefits. As I am not sure which drug you have taken I have put in various links about different trials for you to look at.

There was a trial comparing anastrozole and tamoxifen after surgery which you can see here

and more information about anastrozole here

and a clinical trial that looked at letrozole here

Breast Cancer Now have some information about these different drugs which you may find helpful to look at here

You have posted in 'Ask the Nurses' but if you post on another thread or you start your own then you may find that you get more responses.

You could also give Breast Cancer Now a ring. This is mainly manned by Breast Cancer nurses and you could talk this through with them. Their number is Freephone 0808 800 6000.

If you would like to talk any of this through with one of the nurses on our helpline then you are welcome to get back to us or give us a ring.

Our number is Freephone 0808 800 4040 and the nurses are here Monday to Friday 9 am to 5 pm.

    All the best,

    Catherine
