Failed colposcopy

Hi, I'm cin 2, 12 months ago cin 1. Hpv for a number of years. Couldnt have coloscopy because cervix was shut. The nurse daid tgey would review the original smear in two weeks. I know they said it would mean wait another 6 months or have loop excursion i just wondered how they review it as i thought they would have that info already? Thank you so much. .

  • Hello Sasm and thanks for the post

It can be a worry when HPV and abnormal cells in the cervix are changing but remember the screening programme is all about preventing cervical cancer.

Without being involved in your care it is difficult to know exactly what they mean by reviewing your original smear result. However I can only assume the colposcopy team are reviewing all your results so far to decide the next steps to be taken. I am sure they will explain everything with you once this has been decided.

Usually CIN1 resolves by itself without the need for treatment, CIN2 abnormal cells likewise can also clear by itself but often than not a treatment such as a loop excision is recommended to remove this abnormality as with CIN3. They may decide to review the situation again by repeating the screening in 6 months but wait and see what the team decides is best for you.

Please get back to us if you need any more information or support.  You may find it helpful to talk things through with one of the nurses on our helpline.  The number to call is Freephone 0808 800 4040 and the lines are open from 9am till 5pm Monday to Friday.

    Best wishes,

    Naomi
