Nipple now painful

Urgent referral appointment is Saturday the 2nd. I’ve had on going issues which I listed on another post (over years) and GP wanted to rule out pagets due to nipple skin changes etc.

I am a breastfeeding mother but don’t feed the side that’s having issues. However today the nipple in question is painful. I can feel lumps inside it / it’s very tender. Usually it’s not painful. The appearance of the nipple remains the same, red and inflamed which is always is.

I understand breast cancer to not be painful. Although my appointment is Saturday would it be advisable to ring my GP again to check it’s not something like nipple mastitis? (On top of the issues I’m having not as a full diagnosis) or should I just wait for the clinic on Saturday. I don’t have a temperature

  • Hello Suzie2020

I'm sorry to hear you are going to the breast unit for some ongoing symptoms later this week.

Unfortunately no one here can say if the more recent changes you can feel are related or something different altogether. If this is getting worse and is too unbearable I think it would be best to speak with your GP or a nurse practitioner to rule out infection, just to be on the safe side.

Please get back to us if you need any more information or support.  You may find it helpful to talk things through with one of the nurses on our helpline.  The number to call is Freephone 0808 800 4040 and the lines are open from 9am till 5pm Monday to Friday.

    All the best,

    Naomi
