CLL

My husband has been on Imbrutanib for the last seven years, the consultant says it has now stopped working and want to put him on Chlorambucil we have looked on the internet and it seems to be quite an old drug, what do you think of Zanubrutinib (brukinsa). they decided not to put him on another drug because he has a kidney impairment.

  • Hello Primitivo and thanks for the post

I am sorry to hear about your husbands situation and the Ibrutinib is no longer working for him.

Unfortunately we cannot advise on individual patients treatments or give a second opinion and you really need to discuss the next steps with your husbands team.

I'm afraid usually if a patients cancer has become resistant to a drug such as ibrutinib, which is a BTK Inhibitor there is usually no benefit to patients switching to a different type of BTK inhibitor such as zanubritinib as this works in a similar way. However do discuss this with the specialist doctor when you can.

There are situations where a patient is unsuitable for other treatments due to possible side effects on different organs such as the kidneys that would cause more of a risk than a benefit. When this is the case the team will discuss the alternative options available.

I hope this helps. Please get back to us if you need any more information or support.  You may find it helpful to talk things through with one of the nurses on our helpline.  The number to call is Freephone 0808 800 4040 and the lines are open from 9am till 5pm Monday to Friday.

    Best wishes,

    Naomi
