Delay surgery

Hi all

Last year, I had surgery to remove an ovarian cyst. Thankfully, it came back benign but it did contain thyroid cells. These cells were also found in a biopsy of my omentum. As this is quite rare, I have been referred for a thyroidectomy to be followed by radioactive iodine treatment.

I am due to meet the thyroid surgeon to discuss this surgery but I am really struggling with the thought of having to have another operation and the radioactive iodine treatment. Although, I have recovered well from my laparotomy, I don’t feel like myself yet and do still have some abdominal pain.

My question is, if I was to ask to delay surgery is that something that is accepted? Or will I be taken off the list? I just don’t feel ready for this yet. My thyroid is functioning fine, I have no symptoms and my overall health is great. I’m really struggling to accept this recommendation at this moment.

Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

Kind regards

  • Hello and thanks for posting,

I can understand your questions. Unfortunately, as nurses, we can't give you a medical opinion on this.

Your consultant will know more about the pathology results, and what information they have so far. Generally, it isn't wise to delay treatment, if cancer cells have been found away from the original primary cancer site. Do ask them to explain more at the appointment. They will do their best to accommodate you, as regards to planning further treatment.

    Wishing you the best,

    Vanda

  • Thanks for the reply. I may not have explained properly but no cancer was found anywhere. The recommended surgery is more from a preventative measure.

i will speak with the surgeon and direct my questions to them directly.
