How can I help my mum get through a Lobectomy

My mum was diagnosed with lung cancer at the start of Feb 2024 having had a PET scan. She's in her early 70's and smoked for years giving up in favour of a vape about 10 years ago. She had a pre-assessment on Tuesday for a left upper lobe removal as they think it's isolated. She had several pulmonary embolisms summer last year and was lucky to recover, it is then they found a 6mm nodule, fast forward to now and it's 9mm with some suspicious looking areas around it.

We are waiting now for a surgery date for a left upper lobectomy by keyhole and possibly by Southampton's robot Da Vinci.

Mum lives 50 miles from me so is going to come to me after her surgery so I can care for her. I've sorted about temporary doctors and district nurses if needed.

What I would like is some practical advice on how I can prepare for her recovery.

Thank you

A worried loving daughter x

  • Hi Peppa and thank you for your post

I am sorry to hear of your mum’s situation. She is lucky to have a daughter like you who is willing to take care of her.

Hospital discharge procedures can vary, but when needed, community home care packages involving social services and sometimes NHS community based staff are usually arranged by the hospital before discharge. The NHS website has some information about hospital discharge here and here.

Another charity, Age UK, has some useful information at the following link.

She should be discharged with all medication that she will need and instructions on when and how to take them. She should also have a discharge letter which should include any information / instructions about wounds and sutures.

Usually your mum would see a physiotherapist at the hospital who can teach her some breathing exercises. It is important that she keeps doing these exercises to help her recovery. If she has a specialist nurse ensure you have their contact details in case you need to call them.

I hope you find this information helpful. Please get back to us if you need any more information or support.  You may find it helpful to talk things through with one of the nurses on our helpline.  The number to call is Freephone 0808 800 4040 and the lines are open from 9am till 5pm Monday to Friday.

    Kind regards,

    Tina
