Mole Removed - Are there further tests whilst awaiting results

Hello,

I've just had a mole removed and it is being sent off to test whether there is cancer present. Prior to undergoing the mole removal I was told I could have the procedure within 2 weeks and that the test results would come back within 12 days. I thought that was fairly quick. I had the procedure and prior to leaving the hopsital I was confirming how I should expect to receive the results and I was then told it would be 8 weeks (2 months), because they were busy and backed up at the hospital it is sent to. I feel really let down I wasn't told before so I could go privately. I want to know sooner rather than later if there's any possibility that if it is cancer it has spread so I can get on with further treatment. Are there any tests I can have privately that would help me discover this? Can I have the mole moved to private care so it can be tested sooner? I'm about to have a baby in 2 weeks and am juggling gestational diabetes, a toddler, pregnancy, an early c section and now this. Anything that could be done to help me speed up the process would be appreciated. I keep thinking about the kids and the importance of acting quickly. We have melanoma in our family.

  • Hello Londoner and thank you for posting.

I am so sorry you are going through this, you have a lot on your plate right now.

It is not unusual for skin and moles to change in pregnancy due to the surge of hormones, but as a precaution moles are often removed to be sure.

I appreciate that this is a long wait to what you were expecting, but that is, unfortunately, the expected time frame in some areas, due to the pressure on the laboratories that examine the biopsies. It is a shame that you were told something different initially as you could have made a different decision at the time. It is now impossible to swap to private care, as the mole removal has already happened and the biopsy in the NHS system.

I think this is worth discussing with your midwife and obstetrician first so they can support you emotionally and to see if they can connect with the dermatology team.  They may, due to your circumstances, say that you would appreciate a speedier result, but I still don't know if this will make a difference.

Take care and I hope you have support at this time Londoner. Do give us a call on our helpline if you want to talk things through, the number is Freephone 0808 800 4040, and the lines are open from 9am till 5pm, Monday to Friday.

    Sarah.
