3 tumor marker bloods sent for

Hi  im 50 years old, perimenopausul after a only slightly raised Ca125, which has steadly been rising over past few years although still only 48, and following some symptoms. Following a internal ultrasound which she sais she couldn't see anything worrying just some fibroids, the consultant sent for  ca125, CEA and ca19-9

My question is. Is this a cancer scare?? I don't want my family to think im making a fuss, could it be the drs being overly cautious, could all these come back clear??

I'm aware the ca125 is low compared to what it can before some ppl..help iv no one else to speak to

  • Hello and thank you for your post.

The CA 125, CEA and the CA 19.99 are blood tests that look for the level of these types of proteins. They are sometimes raised, but not always, in some type of cancer.  However, as you already know the CA 125 test on its own is not reliable enough to diagnose people, this is the same for the other tests you are having.  They could of course all come back normal.

I would say that your doctors are being cautious and are being thorough. While this could be seen as a reassuring thing to do it could also be a worry.

I hope this helps. Please get back to us if you need any more information or support and you may find it helpful to talk things through with one of the nurses on our helpline.  The number to call is Freephone 0808 800 4040 and the lines are open from 9am till 5pm Monday to Friday.

    Take care,
