LAR

My hubby is scheduled for an LAR next week and is adamant that he does not want an ileostomy even if it means all the cancer is not removed.  He feel this will reduce the quality of his life in a way he is not prepared to deal with. I have told him that it is unlikely the surgeon will perform any operation under those circumstances as she will not be prepared to get to the point where an ileostomy becomes a certainty, stop and just close him up, so he shouldn't even try and request this>  Hopefully, I'm giving him the right advice, although I will say that I do appreciate it is his life and he has a right to make that decision.

  • Hello and thanks for your post,

If your husband is concerned about the thought of a stoma he does need to discuss this with his surgeon before the operation.  There is an NHS leaflet explaining what is involved in having a low anterior resection which you may find helpful to read about here

I am not sure what the surgeon is planning but it is important that any concerns about the forthcoming operation are discussed and his concerns about having a stoma are discussed. If a stoma is a possibility then it may be helpful for your hubby to see a stoma nurse to see what is involved before he makes his mind up that he definitely does not want one.

If you have a bowel cancer nurse then do discuss this with them. If he does need further blood tests at his pre-assessment it may be helpful to see if you can see his bowel cancer nurse there.

It is hard without being involved in your hubbie's care to make a proper assessment of his situation so I do hope that he manages to talk to someone soon.

You are both more then welcome to ring and discuss any of this with one of the nurses on the helpline. Our number is Freephone 0808 800 4040 and we are here Monday to Friday 9 am to 5 pm.

    All the best,

    Catherine
