Rectal cancer

Hubbies operation is scheduled for 29th Feb.  He had his pre-assessment yesterday 19th Feb. and had a blood test.  He's a bit concerned that at this pre-assessment he was told he would have to have another blood test 2 to 4 days before the operation, something that he's never had to do with his 3 previous pre-assessments even though these were all done 3 to 4 weeks before his ops.  Is this normal?

  • Hello, and thanks for your post,

I am afraid I don't know the answer to your question without being involved in your husband's care.

If your hubbie had a slightly abnormal blood test they may want to repeat the result but I am really not sure. If your husband has had other treatment then this may have had an effect on his blood result.

When he goes for his next blood test do encourage your hubbie to find out why it needed to be repeated.

I hope his operation goes well and if you would like to chat things through on the phone then you are welcome to give us a call.

Our number is Freephone 0808 800 4040 and the nurses are here Monday to Friday 9 am to 5 pm.

    All the best,

    Catherine

  • His other treatments were for two hip and a shoulder replacement.  Also they didn't have the result of his first blood test when they said he had to have another one as they had only just done it in the pre-assessment.  That's why we thought it was strange.
