Biopsy showed CIN3, loop found NO abnormality at all

I had my smear in Oct ‘23. It showed some form of abnormality, so I was sent to the Colposcopy Unit at my local hospital for a biopsy 2 weeks later. 4 weeks after the biopsy, I got my results - CIN3 high grade cell changes and a LLETZ procedure was needed to treat it. My anxiety after reading that letter was horrendous. I had multiple panic attacks (something I don’t struggle with usually) and I felt very down and depressed thinking the worst. The LLETZ procedure was done on 22nd Dec and wasn’t anywhere near as bad as what I had made it to be in my own head. The doctor who did the procedure said it would be a 4-6 week wait for results but reassured me this procedure has a high success rate. 5 weeks later I got my results - “no abnormality found, your results are going to be discussed at a multidisciplinary meeting and we will write to you with the outcome” … I couldn’t believe it, how could my biopsy show CIN3, the highest grade of cell changes but my LLETZ is completely clear? I got the results of the meeting and they have decided to send me for 6 monthly smears. I’m obviously relieved that I’m in the clear but it has baffled me and I feel like something isn’t quite right. I don’t understand how a biopsy can show such a severe change but then all of a sudden be told there’s nothing there? I want it looking into more if I’m honest, as I can’t find anything online about anyone else having this sort of a result.

  • Hello Sesquipadalian and thanks for posting here

I can appreciate your question and being left confused about your LLETZ results.

Unfortunately without any of us here being involved in your care it is impossible to say why the results have come back as they have. I think it is best for you to contact the colposcopy unit and ask if you can have an appointment to ask more questions and get a better understanding about what has happened.

I'm sorry we can't be more help on this occasion. Please get back to us if you need any more information or support.  You may find it helpful to talk things through with one of the nurses on our helpline.  The number to call is Freephone 0808 800 4040 and the lines are open from 9am till 5pm Monday to Friday.

    Best wishes,

    Naomi
