Stage 4 ovarian cancer

My mother, who is 59 years old, was diagnosed with stage 4 ovarian cancer in 2021. She underwent an emergency Hartmann's procedure in August 2021 and had her ovaries removed in January 2022. She now has a permanent colostomy bag. Following her surgeries, she received 6 rounds of chemotherapy - 3 rounds after the Hartmann's procedure and 3 rounds after the operation on her ovaries. In October 2023, she was informed that the cancer had metastasized to her lungs. A CT scan in January 2024 led the oncologist to decide that she no longer requires additional chemotherapy. She has been experiencing symptoms such as shortness of breath, heart palpitations, fever, dizziness, vomiting, loss of appetite, and difficulty walking. These symptoms occur every few weeks, with some weeks being better than others. I am concerned about this pattern - should I be worried?

  • Hello Iqra and thanks for posting on cancer chat

I am sorry to hear about your mother's past treatment for ovarian cancer. It must be concerning to see you mum feeling so unwell recently and it is important she gets assessed by her own doctor.

We can't say what these symptoms are being caused by or if they are related to her previous diagnosis or treatment. Do make sure your mother gets in touch with either her GP or specialist team when she can so they can take a look at her and run some tests if needed to find out more.

I hope you know more soon and that your mother will be okay. Please get back to us if you need any more information or support.  You may find it helpful to talk things through with one of the nurses on our helpline.  The number to call is Freephone 0808 800 4040 and the lines are open from 9am till 5pm Monday to Friday.

    Take care,

    Naomi
