Lung function prior to radiology

My Dad has stage 3 oesophageal scc and has just finished a reduced chemo regime (reduction due to kidney failure after first dose), and is due to start radiotherapy in the next few weeks. The oncologist mentioned needing lung function tests prior to starting. Could this change his treatment plan if he has poor lung function? He has heart failure which makes him very breathless and has recently had the flu (confirmed during admission at the hospital), so is really on the back foot. I am just worried what if he is not fit enough for radiotherapy? Is that a thing?
Thank you for reading this far x

  • Hello AlisonKP and thanks for posting

I am sorry to hear about your dad, it sounds like he has had a rough time recently.

Unfortunately no one can say here whether they could change the plan for radiotherapy because of the lung function test results. There can be instances where they may reduce the dose or sessions of radiotherapy given just like with the chemo. At the same time there are occasions when the doctors decide that a treatment may do the patient more harm than good so therefore decide against it.

For now I think you need to try and just wait and see what the doctor has to say once all the tests have been carried out and the results are in.

Try not to let your mind run away with itself and rather take things one step at a time. Do ask the doctors and nurses any questions you have to get a better understanding of what is going on and what may happen next.

Please get back to us if you need any more information or support.  You may find it helpful to talk things through with one of the nurses on our helpline.  The number to call is Freephone 0808 800 4040 and the lines are open from 9am till 5pm Monday to Friday.

    Best wishes,

    Naomi
