LEEP

Hello

I had LEEP procedure in January for CIN 2 cells. I have just had my results and the cells have come back as only CIN 1 cells which is obviously really good news, but I just don’t understand how they they were CIN 2 at first?

thank you

  • Hello KW2023x and thanks for the post

At a colposcopy appointment after abnormal cells are detected in screening the colposcopist often take a biopsy before offering treatment to confirm the type and severity of abnormal cells. These usually come back as cervical Intraepithelial neoplasia (cin) 1,2 or 3. Sometimes the colposcopist after staining the cervix will decide to treat before taking a biopsy according to the abnormal areas they can see on the cervix.

There are instances when the body alongside clearing high risk strains of HPV can also clear abnormal cells, so the result changing may have been the result of your body starting to clear some of the cells by itself.

It is difficult without being involved in you care to comment on what has happened exactly for you and this is best talked through with the colposcopy team at your hospital.

I assume you are now going to be rescreened in 6 months to carry out what is called the 'test of cure' to make sure the cervix has returned to normal.

Please get back to us if you need any more information or support.  You may find it helpful to talk things through with one of the nurses on our helpline.  The number to call is Freephone 0808 800 4040 and the lines are open from 9am till 5pm Monday to Friday.

    Best wishes,

    Naomi
