Scared of Ovarian Cancer

I’m 22, never been sexually active and my periods are normal with no concerns. I take sertraline 50mg for anxiety. Recently I’ve been worrying about ovarian cancer, having seen a beautiful young Mu passing away after it went undetected after multiple GP visits. I work long hours so I am always tired, no unintentional weight loss, normal bowel habits but my tummy just doesn’t feel right. I know I’m due a period soon, they aren’t regular but I usually know my body quite well so I have the usual signs. I am a student nurse so sometimes I think I always overthink any sensation in my body, but I do feel a bit bloated but cannot palpate any obvious masses. I do feel I need to wee a bit more than usual at night but not sure if that’s just my anxiety. I don’t want to waste a GP appointment if this is just PMS symptoms and anxiety, should I observe the symptoms for a little while and then see how I feel?

  • Hello and thank you for your post.

I am sorry to hear about the worry you have about your health.

While it is not possible for us to tell you if anything is the matter it would be very unlikely that you have ovarian cancer. This is because for most people it happens after the menopause.

Because you are worried I do think you should make a GP appointment to go over your symptoms and what is worrying you. You would not be wasting anyone's time.

Please get back to us if you need any more information or support.  You may find it helpful to talk things through with one of the nurses on our helpline.  The number to call is Freephone 0808 800 4040 and the lines are open from 9am till 5pm Monday to Friday.

    Yours sincerely,

    Caroline
