Prostrate

Hi I had a series of blood tests at my new doctor having returned from living abroad for 5 years.

The PSA result was 20 ..... my doctor called me in and I had a digital inspection and he said although my prostrate was smooth it was also larger on one side more than the other , based on the PSA and his digital observations he told me he was going to arrange for me to see a specialist in the next 2 weeks ( this was said on 12th Feb )

I have had  a letter from my local hospital telling me they are going to phone me on the 28th Feb to discuss my diagnosis , I'm worried if my prostrate is infected by cancer that the 2 week delay is making matters worse , what do you think ?

  • In my experience they will not give you bad news over the phone, they would make an appointment for you to see a consultant in their office.

  • Hello and thank you for your post.

I am sorry that you are being investigated for a possible prostate cancer.

Try not to worry too much because it looks like from the dates you have been given that you will be waiting a little over 2 weeks to be seen. This is unlikely to cause you any problems if you are diagnosed with prostate cancer. This is because most cancers do not grow quickly.

The UK has cancer waiting times to get diagnosed with cancer and start treatment.  For example NHS England has introduced a new target called the Faster Diagnosis Standard (FDS). The target is that you should not wait more than 28 days from referral to finding out whether you have cancer or not.

To find out more about cancer waiting times in the whole of the UK please look on our website here.

Please get back to us if you need any more information or support.  You may find it helpful to talk things through with one of the nurses on our helpline.  The number to call is Freephone 0808 800 4040 and the lines are open from 9am till 5pm Monday to Friday.

    Take care,
