Pain after surgery

I had a radical nephrectomy 9 weeks ago to my left side. The last 2 days I have had pains in my right side. I was checked by the hospital who said all ok although they thought I may have had a kidney stone in my surviving kidney.

i just wondered is it normal to have pain in the opposite side after that long after surgery. I could understand if it was the side the kidney was removed. It feels bruised and tender.

thank you in advance!

  • Hello and thank you for your post,

It is possible to have some pain for a few weeks or months after a nephrectomy. However, the pain is usually associated with where the surgery took place.

It is good to know that you have been checked out by your urology team,  I think the best thing to do now is that if it does not get better you continue to let them know about the pain you have.  Your specialist team will be best placed to know if anything is the matter.

Please get back to us if you need any more information or support.  You may find it helpful to talk things through with one of the nurses on our helpline.  The number to call is Freephone 0808 800 4040 and the lines are open from 9am till 5pm Monday to Friday.

    Take care,

    Caroline
