Has my biopsy been taken in the right area?

Hi everyone,

I'm new here, sadly. I had a biopsy in my right breast today. 3 punctures. My big question is, did they do it in the right area? I'm so worried because where the bandage is, is not where I can feel my lump to be. The lump is quite prominent, yet the ultrasound they said wasn't very clear. The Dr could feel it ok, and they could see some shadow (as I was looking) but yea, the biopsy wasn't where I can feel the lump. Is this wrong ? Normal? I'm scared of potentially getting a false negative now.

I'm also being referred for an MRI because the mammogram showed "concerns" but the consultant said it looked "wishy washy". They said they are worried as it's a hard large lump with what the mammogram showed but the ultrasound wasn't clear. I'm just scared of them missing something if they've not taken the biopsy in the correct place. I've only noticed now, I guess cos I was numbed up and clothing back on till bedtime

Any guidance would be appreciated. I'm terrified :(

Thanks x

  • Hello and thank you for your post,

I am sorry to learn what you are going through, this must be a difficult time.

Waiting for tests and test results can be a very anxious time, and the uncertainty can be hard to live with, and often people will feel they have no control. As Jolamine says I would try not to worry about the biopsy, as the doctors will know where they need to take the cells from with the guidance of the ultrasound and the mammogram. It is also usual when the mammogram is not clear that an MRI scan may be done to help give the doctors a clearer picture of the lump and whether or not further biopsies may be needed.

In the meantime, unfortunately, no one can say what the results will be until all the tests have been done.  It is often a case of sitting tight and taking each day as it comes. Looking on the internet for information can be helpful for some people but it can also be upsetting and confusing. It is important to know that the information is not going to be able to say what your situation is.

There is no right or wrong way to deal with the feelings you are having, for some people, it is helpful to carry on with normal activities as much as possible such as working to help distract them from the worry. For other people this can be difficult. It can also be helpful to talk about your concerns with a partner or friends and family.

I hope you are not having to wait too long for any answers. Please get back to us if you need any more information or support.  You may find it helpful to talk things through with one of the nurses on our helpline.  The number to call is Freephone 0808 800 4040 and the lines are open from 9am till 5pm Monday to Friday.

    Take care, all the best

    Jemma

  • Thank you so much. I'm really happy to say that, because I rang to query the biopsy - they booked me in for my results on the 27th Feb and my MRI for this Monday. Hopefully they will have the results all together. And, although I am terrified, I am grateful the wait isn't as long as I was anticipating. Thank you so much for all the help thus far. I wish everyone good health xx
