Urgent 2 week referal prostate cancer

Hi,

Im 49 years old and I was sent for urgent suspected urological cancer on the 25th January and had an mri of my prostate and surrounding areas on the 26th January and have read the findings from the attachment sent to my GP surgery of likely t3b. It's now 13th February and I've still not got an appointment to see the urologist and have tried to chase it via phone, email and just yesterday via my Dr without any success barring the same response, they are busy and will get to me asap. Is this normal practice and is there anything I can do?

  • Hello Concerned 2024 and thanks for your post

I'm sorry to read about your situation and that you haven't seen a urologist yet. This must be worrying and frustrating for you.

We are aware that the NHS is under huge pressure at the moment due to staff shortages and the amount of patients waiting to be seen Hospitals do their best to meet the cancer waiting targets, however many are finding this difficult to achieve.   Hospital staff work very hard to try and give their best, but due to lack of resources, things don’t always go smoothly and this is incredibly upsetting for people like yourself.

If you wish to raise this concern with the hospital you can contact the hospital's PALS (Patient Advice Liaison Service) who can investigate this for you There is more information on the NHS website about this here

I hope you hear from the hospital soon. Please get back to us if you need any more information or support.  You may find it helpful to talk things through with one of the nurses on our helpline.  The number to call is Freephone 0808 800 4040 and the lines are open from 9am till 5pm Monday to Friday.

    Kind regards,

    Celene

  • Hi Celene

Thankyou so much for taking the time to reply and the very useful information you've provided. I didn't know about the pals service and will more than likely try it if I still haven't heard anything very soon.

    Keep up the great work.

  • PALS is very good my friend contacted them going back a while about results she was waiting for but they sorted things for her in a couple of days .

  • Thank you Jenny for the information. I phoned the urology department today and I guess I managed to speak to the right person this time. They've just given me an appointment for 4th March. I was hoping for sooner but beggars can't be choosers I guess.

  • That's good news that you've now got an appointment even if it is over 2 weeks away ,if you could take an appointment at short notice I know sometimes they have cancelations and you could put your name on the list and might get seen sooner ,its what I've heard others have done ,anyway I hope you get seen soon and all goes well .

  • Completely agree, others have also suggested the exact same thing. I'll get back in contact today and will ask to be put on the list. Thanks Jenny.
