Melanoma

I recently got diagnosed with melanoma stage 2a, I need a WLE and they mentioned having a SLNB, my melanoma was 1.1mm thick and I’ve been given the option for the biopsy. I have read all about the possible risks and side effects and I just can’t make a decision. It’s a minimum of 2 month wait list and it’s only offered if the thickness is over 1mm so I’m only just into the bracket.many thanks

  • Hello BrinnyP and thanks for the post

I am sorry to hear about your situation and appreciate making a decision about treatment can be difficult.

Unfortunately no one here is in a position to tell you what you should do so it is about finding out as much as you can to help make up your mind.

You may wish to reach out to other melanoma patients on a different section of cancer chat to discuss their thoughts and experiences that may help.

We have a section of information about sentinel node biopsy and melanoma here.

As you say anyone who's melanoma measures deeper than 1mm is usually offered a sentinel node biopsy to check to see if it has spread but there are some risks associated. Do talk through your thoughts and feeling and any questions through with your specialist doctor or nurse if you have one.

Please get back to us if you need any more information or support.  You may find it helpful to talk things through with one of the nurses on our helpline.  The number to call is Freephone 0808 800 4040 and the lines are open from 9am till 5pm Monday to Friday.

    Best wishes,

    Naomi
