Need guidance on followup post mastectomy

Hi,

Please I was diagnosed with early stage invasive ductal carcinoma of the left breast and had modified radical mastectomy in April 2018 as well as chemotherapy. I often had annual routine chest X-rays, breast and abdominal scan since then, however, I relocated to the UK in January 2023 and since then have been finding it difficult to connect to a breast cancer team for my continuous routine breast check ups.

I will appreciate greatly if I could be directed on how to have a mammogram follow up please. It's more than a year now I haven't had a review. Thank you

Hello Mary , I presume you have registered with a Gp surgery ? I would get onto them first and state what you require .I would expect Gp to refer you to breast team . All the best xx

Hello and thanks for posting,

If you are now a permanent UK resident, and registered with a NHS GP, then do ask them about referring you to a breast team at your local hospital.

They will require detailed information about your original breast cancer diagnosis. Patients are sometimes followed up for a period of five years only, if their risk of cancer recurrence is considered low. If you wished to be seen for a longer period, then you may need to consider accessing private health care for this.

You would also be eligible for NHS breast screening, as part of the national screening programme, so do let your GP know your details. This is a mammogram offered every 3 years to women in the general population.
