HRT and melanoma

Hello, recently diagnosed with Ocular Melanoma (ciliary body) and soon to have proton beam therapy. I've been on HRT (Evorel patches 75 and utrogestan 100 pills) for a few years and not sure if I should discontinue? My ocular oncology consultant isn't 100% sure but thinks safe to continue, not sure what data there is to be honest, does anyone have experience with this? Many thanks

  • I'm not a nurse but I've been a melanoma patient for many years (superficial spreading).

Can I suggest that you take a look at https://www.ocumeluk.org/ They may have the information there to answer your question. They also have a support group where you can ask if other patients have had this problem. Good luck with your treatment,

Angie (Stage 3 melanoma patient since 2009)

  • Thanks so much Angie, really appreciate your reply and I will take a look at that website. Still a newbie, and finding online communities and resources so helpful as have so many questions and never manage to remember them all when I get to sit down with a doctor! Wishing you well on your journey, Lucy

  • Hello LuLu24 and than you for posting

I am sorry to hear about your recent diagnosis, this must be a difficult time for you.

At this point in time I don't think there is any evidence to suggest that taking HRT is linked to an increased risk of ocular melanoma. As you can read here some types of HRT may increase the risk of breast, ovarian and womb cancer but this risk is usually small. The benefit of taking HRT may be far greater for some women than the risk of taking HRT.

As your specialist has said they don't think there is any reason for you to stop taking HRT in regards to your type of cancer or treatment.

Please get back to us if you need any more information or support.  You may find it helpful to talk things through with one of the nurses on our helpline.  The number to call is Freephone 0808 800 4040 and the lines are open from 9am till 5pm Monday to Friday.

Best wishes for your upcoming treatment

    Take care

    Naomi

  • Thanks so much Naomi, I appreciate your response and best wishes, Lucy
