Weight loss

I have gained 42 pounds in weight during my chemo treatment because of the steroids. This is putting great strain on my joints and affects my mobility. I can take in foods that will increase my metabolism but won't that also increase the rate my cancer will grow ? I have advanced prostate cancer which is also spread to my bladder and lymph system.

  • Hi Bopper 61, and thank you for your post.

I am sorry to learn that you have prostate cancer that has spread, this must be a difficult time.

Unfortunately having long-term steroids does cause weight gain which can be difficult to control although It may be more manageable through diet. I wondered if you are getting advice from a dietician. If not you could speak with your nurse specialist (CNS) or your GP about getting a referral.

You may also find it helpful to contact the nutrition and living with cancer helpline which has been set up recently to provide nutrition information and support to people living with cancer. They are available on Tuesdays between 12 and 2 pm and Thursdays between 6 and 8 pm. The helpline number is 0333 034 1988 or you can email helpline@wcrf.org

You may have seen our information about steroids on our website here.

It is known that some foods may increase a person's risk of having cancer, for example, processed meats can increase the risk of having bowel cancer, and the main advice is to have a healthy balanced diet, not just to reduce the risk of cancer but also for a person's general health. However, I cannot find information that suggests food that increases metabolism will cause the cancer to spread. The best person to discuss your concerns with would be your specialist or nurse specialist as they know your situation.

I hope this is helpful. Please get back to us if you need any more information or support.  You may find it helpful to talk things through with one of the nurses on our helpline.  The number to call is Freephone 0808 800 4040 and the lines are open from 9am till 5pm Monday to Friday.

    Take care, all the best

    Jemma
