Skin cancer after oesophageal cancer

My dad 77 at the time was diagnosed with oesophageal cancer in 2020. Initially given a negative prognosis but was operated on and is still here, thankfully!. He has now been diagnosed with skin cancer and needs further.  treatment .  I have heard that this can be a result of treatment wondering if this is the case or have I been misinformed.

TIA

  • Hello Mirkel and thanks for posting

I am sorry to hear about your dad's past treatment for oesophageal cancer and the recent news of a skin cancer.

It is known that patients who have had previous radiotherapy treatment are at greater risk of developing a skin cancer in the irradated area, when this occurs it is often many years later.

Other patients are unfortunate enough to get more than 1 cancer in their lifetime.

Do ask the specialist team involved in your dad's care what they think as they are likely to have a better idea if there is a possible link.

Please get back to us if you need any more information or support.  You may find it helpful to talk things through with one of the nurses on our helpline.  The number to call is Freephone 0808 800 4040 and the lines are open from 9am till 5pm Monday to Friday.

    Best wishes,

    Naomi
