Sudden blood stained discharge on hrt menopausal

4 days ago I noticed blood stained vaginal discharge when I wiped after a wee

im 61 have been on hrt about 3 years 75 mg Estradiol patches  and 100mg ugesterome

had transvaginal scan year ago but seemed to fine nothing wrong my symptoms then were urgent need to wee all the time and blood in urine but not bloody discharge

first day I noticed it it was on and off all day and some pelvic pain

2nd day thecsame

3rd day lot less

4th day today only slight this morning but nothing since & no pelvic pain

gp attempted internal exam yesterday but I couldn’t tolerate the pain even on 2mg diazepam tablet beforehand

always had difficulties with it as have very small far back cervix

not had smear test for 10 years

last one due in Covid Gp practice wouldn’t do because of covid

im referred for emergency appointment with gynaecologist

gp mentioned it could be due to some inconsistency with changing hrt patch over last 2 weeks as my lovely cat died and I was heartbroken and forgetting things

coukd it be womb cancer?

gp said it was high on the list

  • Hi , i am 56yrs , also on weekly HRT patches and ostreogen tablets once a day..no period for 2 years and suddenly last week a period and cramps out of the blue, this was 2 days after finding out my mum had cancer of the osophoegus... i think it is the shock that has cuased it. But like you i am not sure..

  • Thank you for replying I appreciate it greatly

im sorry you find yourself in this situation and about your mum’s diagnosis that must be so very difficult I feel for you both … I have been reading up on the internet everything I can to try to find a non sinister reason for the blood and had seen it mentioned that shock or stress can be a cause which reassured me to an extent as along with my little cats death from cancer I also have to move out of my rented bungalow because the owner is going to refurbish it. It was completely out of the blue I saw the planning application on the telegraph pole outside the property one day, and he’d known his plans before I moved in only 18 months ago after having to move out suddenly of my previous rented house of 11 years because the owner decided to sell it. So lots of shock and unwanted upheaval and loss. I’m hoping this has caused my symptoms but the GP didn’t say anything to reassure me like that, quite the opposite in fact, so I’m just left trying not to worry and waiting for the appointment…have you spoken to your GP? Best wishes Lookatlife

  • Hello Ethers and thanks for the post

I am sorry to hear about your mum and this bleeding you are experiencing, this must be a worry.

Unfortunately no one can say the cause so it is important to let your doctor know just to be on the safe side. They will probably want to run some tests but see what they have to say.

Easier said than done but try not to over think things for now.

I hope you know more soon and do get back in touch if you need to. If you ever want to talk this or your mum's situation through on the phone then call us on 0808 800 4040, we're here week days 9-5.

    Best wishes

  • Hi and thank you for your post.

I am sorry to hear that you have so much loss and upheaval surrounding you on top of your post-menopausal bleeding.  I can see how this can be causing you stress and anxiety.

Post-menopausal bleeding can have a range of different causes, and most won't be linked to cancer, but the important thing is that this is going to be investigated. You can read more about post-menopausal bleeding here.  As well as a thickened uterine lining being a possible cause, other things like polyps in the cervix, fibroids, or thinning or inflammation in the vagina can cause bleeding. The gynaecologist will examine you and will arrange tests to find out what may be going on if needed.

While using hormone replacement therapy, bleeding is not unheard of, and switching to another HRT might result in irregularities.

Waiting for your hospital appointment to come through to have further tests, and see what the doctors think, is inevitably worrying. With everything you have going on in your life at the moment, you may find it useful to take a look at the information and resources about anxiety here.

Take care Lookatlife and hope things get sorted for you soon. If you find it helpful to talk things through with one of the nurses on our helpline the number to call is Freephone 0808 800 4040. The lines are open from 9 am till 5 pm, Monday to Friday.

  • I was on HRT patches for years ,occasionally I would have spotting .Did go for hysteroscopy, and had a fibroid which was removed . Had the odd spotting later too but nothing abnormal detected. You said that you had blood in urine ,did Gp test it for urinary tract infection . Good you are getting it investigated, good luck and keep in touch . Xxx

  • Hi rumplestinkskin thsnk you so very much for responding

im not quite sure as daft as it sounds what the Gp decided about the blood in my urine I was seeing different gps every time but one I saw when it was just about purple decided it was beetroot I’d eaten the day before although I’ve eaten beetroot multiple times over the years without it turning my wee red…the last trans vaginal scan I had last year was part of the investigation by a different and I thought more thorough GP into the blood in urine as well as the what I can only describe as dragging period type pain, but that test result was reported back to me by a Practice Nurse NOT the the GP who ordered the scan, who rang me & said there was nothing abnormal but there was some part of my reproductive system they couldn’t see but not to worry - though that struck me as worrisome, but on that day I got that call I was testing the route to a specialist vet for my cat who was just diagnosed with cancer & I just after that I guess trusted GP & focused on my cat who needed a lot of care for the next 10 months. Maybe I put her first but I can’t have children I’ve had several miscarriages and my cat was I suppose like my ‘child’ in that I felt so protective of her, but cancer got past me and took her away

I am on my own never married the stereotypical  ‘cat lady’ but love is love and she was a lovely animal I was lucky to have her

I dont know really if the blood in my urine is related to the blood in my vaginal discharge now

its so confusing when you can see a Gp you can only talk about one issue and need a second appointment to talk about another …

maybe I’ve not been assertive enough I don’t know

i was on Estradiol hrt patches at first but few months ago was told there were no estradiol patches available so had to have an alternative can’t remember its name but begins with E

i used that a few patches then managed to get Estradiol again but wonder if the change caused the bloody discharge

so much uncertainty so many questions

thank you so much for reading & response to my post you’ve helped just doing that as I feel so alone

  • Hello lookatlife,I am so sorry about you cat .I have grown up children but my dogs mean everything to me ,so I can sympathise with you . Maybe the change of HRT caused the spotting , let’s see what the examination shows . Waiting is always horrendous and I think we all think of the worse .I do know that when I have eaten our beetroot salad ,my stool is red ,which when I was a schoolgirl really frightened me . Your urine might be red from your vaginal bleeding .Try not to stress too much ,keep in touch and best wishes xxx
