Bone Marrow Nightmare

I had a bone marrow done over 2 weeks ago, but only an aspiration. Last week, the haematologist rang me to say that the aspiration wasn’t good enough and I need another bone marrow. I asked him if it would be an aspiration again and he promised me it would be. Yesterday, I went for the bone marrow and at the end they showed me the samples and they had done aspiration and biopsy. I was furious, but nothing I could do about it. By the Haematologist lying to me, thinks they are hiding something from me, thinking the worst.
I’ve had the bone marrow, because I was in hospital for several weeks with CVST and brain bleed. It turns out, without telling me, that a genetic test was done when I went in hospital. It was done because only my RBC was very slightly raised. All my blood tests have been normal since.
The genetic test showed a JAK2 mutation and possible underlying MPN, hence the reason I was referred to haematologist.
I’m now panicking and thinking I’ve got cancer, but having normal blood tests makes me wonder what is going on.
I feel that the haematologist has lied to me and prefer honesty, not concealing the truth from me.
What should I think of this and should I be worried, well I am constantly thinking the worst. Thanks if you could give your view. Thanks.

  • Hello and thank you for your post,

I am sorry to learn that you recently had to spend several weeks in hospital, that must have been very difficult.

I am also sorry to read that you feel you have been lied to by the haematologist. I wondered if you were able to discuss this further with them about your concerns. It might also be worth talking to your GP as they may be able to speak with the haematologist on your behalf.

I am afraid as Cancer Information Nurses not involved in your care we are unable to provide a second opinion. Unfortunately, until you have the results of the biopsy/ aspiration, no one can say what your situation is.

I am sorry I cannot be more helpful but I hope you do not have to wait too long for your results and have the answers you need. Please get back to us if you need any more information or support.  You may find it helpful to talk things through with one of the nurses on our helpline.  The number to call is Freephone 0808 800 4040 and the lines are open from 9 am till 5 pm, Monday to Friday.

    Take care, best wishes

    Jemma
