Mole, worried about melanoma

I have a mole that uses to be flat, it has now become raised and a new black mark in the middle. My GP checked it and said it's fine. But I'm worried as the referral guidance says if it changes shape and colour you need a referral. Is a mole becoming raised not a chance in shape? As my GP notes say not changed in shape but more raised than before.

  • My melanoma started 3 years ago with a mole. Explain to your GP that you are worried and concerned about it and ask to be referred to your local hospital. It may be ok but there is no harm in checking. Good luck.

  • Hello Sarah and thanks for your post

Most moles don't develop into skin cancer but there are certain things to look out for in moles that we need to report to the doctor. Again, they don't necessarily mean skin cancer however they do need to be properly assessed just to be on the safe side. GP's are very experienced at looking at moles and are able to decide if someone needs further tests, so if they were worried when they assessed you they would have discussed this with you.

If you remain concerned you can go back and see your doctor again or another GP in the practice. If they don't think you need to be referred urgently to see a specialist then ask them to explain why not and tell them you are worried about melanoma. Hopefully, they will be able to discuss this further with you.

There are guidelines for GPs to help them decide who needs an urgent referral to see a dermatologist at this link.
