Hair re growth

Hi.

Back in July I was diagnosed with NH, L during a PET scan they noticed a hot spot on my breast...cut a long story short , I was also diagnosed with Breast Cancer . I've had 6 R-CHOP chemo"s , the last one being 5wks ago . I'm waiting on another PET scan to see if I'm in remission for the NHL , they I'll will need a mastectomy. They have started me on Letrazole which I understand I'll need to take for 5-10yrs .I lost the majority of my hair during Chemo , will the Letrazole prevent re growth or slow it down as hair thinning is a side effect . Being 5wks post Chemo I"ve not noticed any new hair growth. It was bad enough losing my hair but having to face the prospect of it  not returning!

Thanks

  • Hi, I’m on letrozole too as well as Abemaciclib. These are both not great when it comes to hair thinning. I finished chemo in July last year and it felt like forever to see some growth. It took about 2 months I’d say to start and see growth. But it grows back so quickly. The human body is amazing. I used Wasabi shampoo from lush, very natural but also has caffeine in it to give your hair follicles a kick. It will come, I promise :)

  • Hello and thanks for your post,

I am sorry to hear about your situation.

Letrozole does cause some hair thinning but it does vary from person to person. As you have recently finished chemo you may need to give it a bit more time before your hair starts to grow. There were some helpful comments from the forum member and more comments may come through particularly if you post on another thread. You are at the moment on the 'ask the nurses' thread.

Breast Cancer Now have some information about hair thinning and tips to help minimise it which might be helpful to look at. They also have provided a link at the end of the information about British hair specialists who may be able to advise you. You put in details of where you live to find a specialist in your area.

There is a thread on Breast Cancer Now's forum about hair loss and letrozole which you may find helpful to look at just here.

I do hope that some of these links may be helpful.

If you would like to ring and chat through any of this with one of the nurses on the helpline then do give us a ring.

Our helpline is Freephone 0808 800 4040 and we are here Monday to Friday 9 am to 5 pm.

    All the best,

    Catherine

  • I finished chemo last March for bilateral breastcancer,I was bald . Was put on Letrezole and my hair has grown back very quickly and curly , going to hairdressers this afternoon to tame it . All the best ,it’s amazing how the body heals. Eyebrows and eyelashes came back first . Xxx
