Pancreatic NET

Hello,

I spent last year dealing with breast cancer. It has all gone very well so far.

I am writing because my mother (aged nearly 88) has been diagnosed with a pancreatic NET. Because of her age and her physical frailty the doctors are not doing anything medical. They are assuming that it is malignant or will become malignant. She is presently in hospital for physical rehab and will be going to a nursing home.

Would you be able to give any advice or information about how this condition is likely to progress? This is important information for my mum, me and the carers going forward. The doctor in her rehab hospital is trying to get further info from the diagnosing doctors in the initial hospital. In the meantime I would be grateful for whatever you can offer.

Best

  • Hello and thanks for your post

I'm sorry about your breast cancer diagnosis but pleased things are going well. I was also to read about your mum's situation. This must be a difficult time for you both.

It is difficult for us to answer questions like this as we are not involved in your mum's clinical care. Her specialist team are better placed to advise you on this as they are familiar with all her medical details. If she has a specialist nurse involved in her care then perhaps they can provide you with further information. You often have to call and leave them a message and they will get back to you. If you have any difficulty getting in touch with the hospital, then your mum's GP should be able to help.

We do have a section on our website on pancreatic neuroendocrine tumours which you can read by clicking here . How things might progress will depend on the type and extent of the tumour.

There is a support organisation called Neuroendocrine Cancer UK ( NETs) who support people affected by neuroendocrine tumours. Their contact details are here.

I hope this is of some use. Please get back to us if you need any more information or support.  You may find it helpful to talk things through with one of the nurses on our helpline.  The number to call is Freephone 0808 800 4040 and the lines are open from 9am till 5pm Monday to Friday.

    Kind regards,

    Celene
