Lifestyle changes

Hello to everyone, Today I was diagnosed with 2a melonoma,I was just wondering what lifestyle changes I should be looking to do to help prevent further occurrences or help with the one at present.I have been told to take vitamin D and wondered what brand or type to take?,Any help would be appreciated.

  • Hi Morty1,

I'm not a nurse but I've been a melanoma patient for many years.

Have they tested your Vitamin D level? NICE guidelines state that every newly diagnosed melanoma patient should have their Vit D level tested so that they know what dose of supplement to advise. If their Vitamin D is very deficient the GP should prescribe a short term, high dose supplement & then retest after a time. Once it has reached the required level the patient must then buy their own Vitamin D at a maintenance dose level which many clinicians say 400iu per day but some need to take a higher dose (I take 1000iu daily). The best supplement is an oral spray as it is absorbed into the body quicker than a capsule (Holland & Barratt & Amazon sell the sprays). If, when tested, your Vitamin D level is low but not deficient, you will be advised to purchase a slightly higher dose (perhaps 2000iu) & then be retested in about 6 to 12 months. If you haven't been tested, please ask your nurse/consultant at your next appointment or your GP.

As for other lifestyle changes - the most important is to wear Factor 30 or 50 when out & about in the UK between March and October and of course, when abroad throughout the year. Also, cover up with clothing as that is the best protection. A hat & sunglasses are a must (melanoma can also be in the eye, not just the skin). Keep out of the sun at the height of the day - seek shade. Even when driving, ensure your face is protected & your right arm is too as the UV goes through the windows (people who drive as a profession ie. lorries, taxis etc are prone to melanoma on the right arm or face).

Eat a healthy, balanced diet - the recommended amount of fruit & veg. No fancy diet or supplements help stop a recurrence of melanoma, just try to keep your immune system healthy & it will do the work for you.

I will send you a friend request. If you accept it I can send you more hints & tips by private message. Good luck with your treatment, please let us know how you get on,

Angie (Stage 3 melanoma patient since 2009)

  • Hello and thank you for your post.

I am sorry to hear about your diagnosis of melanoma. I can appreciate you want to do all you can to reduce the risk of it coming back.

You will be given a follow up plan and be told how to check for a possible recurrence, you can read more about how people with melanoma are followed up on our website here.

Protecting your skin from the sun will also be good advice, so you might want to read our information about this here.

It is recommended that people with melanoma take vitamin D,  however, I am afraid that we cannot recommend a particular type to take. Your dermatology team or skin cancer nurse specialist may be able to recommend one or perhaps stick to one from a reputable chemist.  We have information about vitamin D on our website here.

Keeping to a healthy diet and keeping active to keep down weight can help reduce the risk of cancer overall, as well as not drinking too much alcohol or smoking. We have information about all of this on our website here.

I hope this has been of some help to you. Please get back to us if you need any more information or support.  You may find it helpful to talk things through with one of the nurses on our helpline.  The number to call is Freephone 0808 800 4040 and the lines are open from 9am till 5pm Monday to Friday.

    Take care,

    Caroline
