Misdiagnosed scabies/chronic itching linked to cancer - remedies to alleviate?

Our mother (late 70s) has recently been diagnosed with cancer after several months of being very unwell, mainly bed-bound and with what was thought to be scabies. It wasn't scabies (it seems this is often misdiagnosed), but it was so bad that she grew more and more immobile (to avoid itching) and bed-bound. She is now in hospital with diagnosed cancer, but unclear which kind until we get biopsy results, aside that it is in her spinal cord, skeleton and sternum area. Liver and pancreatic cancer have been mentioned. She tires fast, itches still, and her memory is poor, she is still not mobile, but has a bit of an appetite and is not in pain, on steroids for the inflammation and blood thinner (following pulmonary embolism 6y ago); she has had some radiotherapy which seemed to go ok. She had colon cancer in the early 2000s and recovered.
Question here: has anyone experienced this case of chronic itching / pruritis linked to cancer, and what can one do to alleviate this? creams and steroid pills etc help a bit but not that much, antihistamines haven't helped (not surprising since it's not an allergy). It is still really bad and just doesn't help with her morale, though we realise it may also be a bit psychosomatic, ie the lower she feels, the more she itches.

  • Hello and thanks for your post,

I am sorry to hear about your mum.

Your mum is in the best place to find out the cause of her itching as she is in hospital.  It may be linked to a cancer but of course, it is really only her doctors who can say if this may be the cause. Also if her skin is very dry and she is not eating and drinking well then this may have an effect on the skin.

We do have some information on our website about the causes of itching which you can see here

We also have some tips to treat itching which you might find helpful to look at here

Hopefully, once the doctors have got the results of the biopsy they may be able to tell you more. Keeping the skin well moisturised and making sure that she does not get too hot can also help. Do continue to ask the doctors on the ward if there is anything else that they can prescribe that may help relieve her symptoms. they may be able to refer her to a dermatologist to see if they can advise her further.

I do hope that you know more soon.

Do give us a ring if you want to talk things through. Our helpline number is Freephone 0808 800 4040 and the nurses are here Monday to Friday 9 am to 5 pm.

    All the best,

    Catherine

  • Thanks, that's helpful, it seems it is linked with a possible liver cancer. The biopsy has to be redone it seems as they didn't reach far enough for the tissue required, so we're still waiting, and now she has Covid, so it's all taking a while.
