Proctological examination

Hi ,  how come the GP ( any ) are reluctant to refer you for specific examination as proctological consultaton or any other. If symptoms are clearly associated with serious illness,  why wasting time with screening tests? Should I go to A&E because I  am feeling really unwell?  There are so many illnesses because the right time to be treated is crucial.  Colon-rectal cancer doesn't wait , it can turn in 4 stage in 3-4 months. I'm disappointed and frustrated.

  • Hi and thanks for your post,

I am very sorry to hear what a difficult time you are having.

In assessing a patient with abdominal problems a GP will take in to account your age, your general health, change in bowel habits whether you have lost any weight in making an assessment. A lot of bowel problems often don't mean a cancer diagnosis.

I am not sure what tests that you have had done already but before a patient is referred to a specialist the hospital doctors often require the GP to carry out various tests before they see a patient.

BowelCancer Uk have some useful questions that you may find helpful to look through. Have a look here.

We have a list of tests that the doctors may do to help rule out bowel cancer which you can see here

If you do turn up in A&E you may well be referred back to your GP unless you need immediate help so I would go back to the GP or perhaps see a different GP in the practice.

I can understand how waiting for the results of different tests can be incredibly frustrating but often several different tests are needed to understand the cause of someone's symptoms. The Patient's Association have written some information about how to get the most from your GP which you can look at here

I do hope that you know more soon. if you would like to talk any of this through with one of the helpline nurses then you are welcome to give us a ring.

Our number is Freephone 0808 800 4040 and we are here Monday to Friday 9 am to 5 pm.

    All the best,

    Catherine
