What happens next ?

Hi I had my thyroid removed on January 3rd 2024 and had my follow up at the ENT department  on 22nd January 2024 where I was told that the cancer was removed from the muscle and lymph nodes and I would need radioactive iodine treatment. They said I have to wait to get a call from nuclear medicine but couldn’t give me any further information I asked when will this call happen if they could give me an estimate but they said they couldn’t they had done what they needed to do they would discharge me and pass me over to the relevant department . I feel very anxious and I’m terrified incase I miss a call I would like to know a rough idea of how long that call will take just so I can relax and concentrate on my recovery. Please could you advise me how I find out what the next steps are thank you

  • Hello and thanks for your post

I'm afraid I can't tell you how long you may have to wait for the call from nuclear medicine as this will vary in each Hospital Trust. Sometimes they may send out a letter inviting you to come in for your appointment.

If you don't hear anything in the next week or two you can ring them and hopefully they should be able to tell you when your appointment will be.

We have some information on our website on radioactive iodine treatment at this link.

I hope you hear something soon. Give us a ring if you would like to talk anything over.  The number to call is Freephone 0808 800 4040 and the lines are open from 9am till 5pm Monday to Friday.

    Kind regards,

    Celene

  • Thank you for responding so quickly, I can relax now a little and call the department in mid February if I haven’t heard anything  I will have a look at the link too thank you for your help
