MPN

I’ve had many weeks in hospital after suffering a brain bleed. Without my knowledge gene tests were done, identifying JAK2 and possible MPN, but needed confirming with bone marrow.
I had one done over a week ago, but now need another bone marrow. They’ve told me the bone marrow test wasn’t good enough, but now very nervous about having the test done again. Could they be wanting to do a bone marrow test taking a piece of bone? I only had a bone marrow blood test last time taking blood. All my blood tests have been normal all along, so why are they putting me through this again. I fear it’s cancer now.

  • Hello and thank you for your post,

I am sorry to hear about your situation and I can appreciate any worry you have about it.

Unfortunately, some tests have to be repeated if there is not enough information from the first one done.  So, I am sorry you have to go through having another bone marrow test. It does not involve taking a biopsy of bone but it takes a sample of the bone marrow, that is found inside bones.  You can read more about what this type of test is and how it is carried out on our website here.

It can be done to get more information about someone's blood; the red and white cells and it can help with getting a diagnosis which can be for various health conditions not just cancer.

So, I hope you know more about your situation soon. Please get back to us if you need any more information or support.  You may find it helpful to talk things through with one of the nurses on our helpline.  The number to call is Freephone 0808 800 4040 and the lines are open from 9am till 5pm Monday to Friday.

    Take care,

    Caroline
