Cervical Cancer

Hi there, my smear results from 2 years ago came back high risk HPV so I went for the colposcopy and yearly smears since then. My most recent smear from October has came back again with high risk HPV and cell changes and to go back for another colposcopy. Does this sound right and if so what does this mean?

  • Hello and thank you for your post,

Your last screening has shown that you have HPV so the cells on your cervix have been tested and have shown that they are abnormal. So, you now need to be checked out at the colposcopy clinic.

It looks like you have been to the colposcopy clinic before so you will know that this is where your cervix will be checked.  You may need to have a biopsy and you may be offered treatment to remove abnormal cells. Please be reassured that by having this done and because you have attended all your screening appointments it does make it very unlikely you have cancer.

You may find it helpful to talk things through with one of the nurses on our helpline.  The number to call is Freephone 0808 800 4040 and the lines are open from 9am till 5pm Monday to Friday.

    Take care,

    Caroline
