Totally blocked oesophagus

Good afternoon.  I  finished my treatment, both chemotherapy and radiotherapy in August last year. After my last scan it showed that the tumour is ‘inactive’. However, the tumour is high in my oesophagus and has left me totally blocked (even water cannot go down). It could not be operated on as it is too high up in the oesophagus , I cannot have a stent for the same reason. Dilation isn’t possible because of the danger of perforation. My oncologist says I may have to live with it and be on a feeding tube for the rest of my life.
I have asked for a second opinion as, surely, I can’t be the first person to have their oesophagus totally blocked? (I don’t mind where I travel to in the country to find the best person to give that second opinion). Are there any members of the organisation who might be able to help who has been or is in the same position as myself. Most people that I have been in contact with have always had a gap and been able to eat and drink a little.

  • Hi and thank you for your post,

I am sorry to learn of your situation, this must be a difficult time.

Cancer Research UK primarily funds research and clinical trials. We are not a treatment centre and do not provide hospital services, so unfortunately we cannot recommend any doctors or hospitals or offer a second opinion.  We do have information on our website about getting a second opinion here.

I wasn't sure where you were contacting us from and if you are in the UK. There is the website specialist info, which has a directory of specialists and hospitals, which you may find helpful. However you would need to subscribe to it, there is more information about it here.

Doctors are quite used to patients asking for a second opinion, so it might be worth asking your specialist if they could advise you on where to go for this. You may also find it helpful to contact the Oesophageal Patients Association (OPA) for support and advice, as they may be able to put you in contact with someone in a similar situation. There is more detailed information about the organisation here.

I hope this helps, do get back to us for any more information or support. You may find it more helpful to speak with one of our information nurses directly, between 9 am and 5pm Monday to Friday freephone 8080 800 4040

    Take care, best wishes

    Jemma
