My mole was excised at the beginning of January. Results came back as a stage 1. Had a wide area excision on Monday, and now have to wait for biopsy results.
Are there statistics for wide area excision biopsy results ?
thank you

Hello, sounds very similar to me. Didn't wait for long for the biopsy result after second excision and was told all clear and no further action required other than 3 monthly check ups for a year
How have you been
I'm not a nurse but I have been a melanoma patient for many years and I know lots of fellow patients. Most WLE results come back clear but I don't know if there are any stats for this. Good luck,
Angie (Stage 3 melanoma patient since 2009)
Hello and thanks for your post
I'm sorry you've been diagnosed with melanoma but pleased you've now completed your treatment. A wide local excision following initial mole removal is the main treatment for early stage melanoma.
I'm not aware of any statistics for WLE results. This is something that the NHS may collect so do ask your specialist team about this. But most early stage WLE results comes back clear.
The National Institute for Health and Care Excellence (NICE) recommend that for stage 1 melanoma, the surgeon removes at least 1 cm of tissue around the melanoma.
I hope this helps. Give us a ring if you would like to talk anything over. The number to call is Freephone 0808 800 4040 and the lines are open from 9am till 5pm Monday to Friday.
Kind regards,
