Colorectal cancer

Hi, my Mum.is nearly 86 but doing well apart from rectal cancer. She's had radiotherapy but unfortunately the cancer has returned in 7 months. The operation is a major op and difficult for her as she would be left with a permanent stoma bag.

The consultant feels the operation is mums best option, I just wanted to ask if mum were to just have chemotherapy what ate the chances of that killing the cancer  ?

Is there another option for treatment please ?

Mum had a major surgery 14 months ago after breaking her hip and leg and was very strong post surgery with an excellent recovery.

She would of course have an assessment for the surgery,  the consultant is keen this is a good option, of course we have been asked to think about the options, with mum deciding what she wants to do.

Any advice is much appreciated  xxx Thankyou H

  • Hello HelenS and thanks for the post

I am sorry to hear your mum's cancer has returned so soon after her initial treatment.

Unfortunately as nurses here we cannot give a medical opinion or recommend treatments as we aren't directly involved in your mum's care.

It is best to ask the specialist team involved what the other options are apart from surgery and what the success may be if she were to decide against surgery.

All treatments i'm afraid have potential side effects which is why each patient needs to weigh these up when making a decision about what is best for them.

We have some general information about rectal cancer treatment here that you may wish to take a look at. As I am sure you are aware decisions about treatment are made on an individual basis according to the type, stage and extent of a cancer as well as the patients general health and fitness levels.

Please get back to us if you need any more information or support.  You may find it helpful to talk things through with one of the nurses on our helpline.  The number to call is Freephone 0808 800 4040 and the lines are open from 9am till 5pm Monday to Friday.

    Best wishes,

    Naomi
